My children have heard somewhere that you can blow up a balloon by mixing baking powder with vinegar. Yes you can! It is a well-known experiment and should be fun to do!
Balloon is filled with baking powder and the bottle with vinegar
Releasing baking powder into bottle
Balloon starting to be blown up
Balloon blown up!
How does it work?
It is CO2, Carbon dioxide! What is blowing up the balloon is this very familiar gas, the one we humans constantly breathe out. First, the CO2 is part of the baking powder. Meeting the vinegar, it is set free. Free as a gas, it needs more space and moves into the balloon and blows it up. Graving for more details? It’s an acid-base-reaction, with vinegar being the acid and baking powder being the base.
Thanks to Tamara and Sami for doing the experiment!
